Our Experience and Review: TOPPL by West Paw

Wufs up!

Picture this: You’re late for work, your dog’s staring at you with “What now?” eyes, and the neighbor’s cat just triggered the 2nd bark-fest of the morning. Welcome to the life of a pet owner (experienced, accidental, or surviving). When it comes to helping dogs with anxiety, science and smart toys can give a leg up. One such hero is the West Paw Toppl®, a “Made in America” canine puzzle toy with a sustainability street cred and the uncanny power to turn canine nerves into focus and fun.

Design and Construction

The Toppl isn’t just another chew toy—it’s a meticulously engineered piece of recyclable Zogoflex® magic. Molded in a single piece for durability and reduced environmental waste, it features:

Grooves at the inner neck designed for nesting with a second, differently sized Toppl (hello, engineering class project vibes).

A single aperture midway  where dry food and treats meets “play to eat” like function.

Weighted, wobbly bottom ensuring it topples and takes more effort to force rolling away.

These design choices are no accident; studies show that innovative, food-dispensing toys foster mental engagement and reduce anxious dog behavior.

How It Works

Here’s where the fun and science come together. Fill the Toppl with food or treats (wet, dry, or wet dry mix, frozen overnight). Your dog then pushes, tilts, rolls, and if frozen licks, it until tasty bits fall out, forgetting about that delivery person entirely. For an increased challenge, nestle a second, larger Toppl on top and watch your dog step up their game.

The wobbly, weighted base and challenging food release require problem-solving, which helps channel anxiety-driven energy into focus and persistence.

Modularity allows mixing Toppl sizes, extending interest and engagement—crucial for anxious dogs needing longer disruptions to negative patterns.

Maintenance and Durability

Let’s get real: nobody wants a stinky, slimy toy. The West Paw Toppl is dishwasher safe so you can easily resolve mystery slobber layers. The Toppl is built tough for moderate chewers, and has held together well in our home for years. West Paw also includes a closed-loop recycling promise. Humans return spent Zogoflex toys and get a replacement. That’s the circle of life, pet toy edition!

Fun and Funner if:

Fun:
  • Infinitely recyclable Zogoflex plastic, made and recycled in the USA and supports sustainable consumer practices.

  • Unique single molded design easy for humans to prepare for canine best friend

  • Suitable for wet or dry foods, easily cleaned in the dishwasher.

Funner if:
  • No single-piece cap: Must buy two Toppls for to achieve “unlock mode”.

  • More apertures on the side walls for use with dry food or treats

  • More spread out texture variety on the inside for increased enrichment.

Conclusions

The West Paw Toppl isn’t just a treat dispenser, it’s a canine focus taming device with environmental benefits for humans who like feeling smug (or at least responsible) about their purchases. Scientific studies increasingly recommend food-based enrichment for anxious dogs, linking interactive toys like the Toppl to decreased nervous behaviors, improved focus, and better owner-pet relationships. The more ways you use it (changing food, adding the second Toppl, freezing treats), the more your dog is mentally stimulated, focused in the moment and less worried about invisible stressors.

So, to all my fellow dog parents: it’s time to stop worrying, start playing, and let your dog get lost in snack-induced, Inception-level focus. If the Toppl doesn’t fall, are you still dreaming?…. 🐶❤️ Thanks for growing with us!
